On Thursday May 11th, The Muslim Islamic Council of Windsor held its 6th Annual Mulim Community Appreciation Dinner at the Ciociaro Club of Windsor. In attendance were representatives from the Federal and Provincial NDP, Liberal and Conservative parties; Mayor Drew Dilkens, City Councilman, Members of the RCMP, Windsor Police, non-for-profit organizations and heads of various communities in Windsor, professionals in the community and business owners.
The event, “Marking our Celebrations of Canada 150”, began with a recitation from the Quran and was followed by welcoming remarks from Dr. Maher El-Masri, Chairperson of the Windsor Islamic Council. Among the speakers was Mrs. Amal Albaz, Poet and Activist, who entertained the crowd with verses from her poetry, including a recitation of her poem “Islam 101”.
Topics of the speeches included the importance of educating others on what Islam really is and what it stands for through positive actions and on the importance of diversity and inclusion. The speeches rallied around the need for the Muslim Community to be open and to share their culture with the larger Canadian community. Speakers encouraged attendees to be more proactive in the community and to embrace their contributions and to continue to be influential members of society and to work tirelessly to give back to the community. A beautiful power point video was shown depicting the professions of different members of the Muslim community in Windsor with them explaining what Windsor and Canada means to them.
